Summer is over and the “”Christian Photographers on Facebook” weekly photo contest is back! I try to enter one or two photos in each week’s contest, but the real value (for me) comes in learning from photos others submit. I understand photography in a technical sense, but there is always more to learn when it comes to picture composition and the creative side of photography.
This week’s theme is “Leading Lines: a compositional technique in photography that use lines to guide the viewer’s eye to the subject of a photo.” For your interest, here are the two photos I submitted:
Into sunny mists on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I shot this photo through the windshield of my rental car on a crisp fall morning when I came around a curve and found the sunbeams streaming down through the mist. Lighting was a bit of a challenge, but I was happy with how the photo turned out.Raising our eyes to the heavens. These are coastal redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument, some miles north of San Francisco. We were touring the park with family, and I couldn’t resist trying to capture the view towering over us.Fountain in a botanical garden (Allerton Garden?) in Kauai. I did not enter this photo in the contest because, while interesting, I don’t think it measures up to the other two. My two cents worth of opinion. Anyway, the interest is that water enters the trough at a steady rate at the top of this gentle slope and, by the time it flows past the undulations, it pours out in pulses at a rate of one pulse per second. Don’t know who designed this, but it is a fascinating application of hydraulic engineering!
