Yellowstone 2023 Part 2

Here are a few more favorite photos from our September visit to Yellowstone National Park:

A closer view of the edge of Grand Prismatic Spring. Water in the deep blue center is sterile because it is almost at the boiling point. As water temperatures start to cool near the edge of the pool, a variety of thermophilic (look it up) bacteria start to grow. Each band of color represents a particular combination of bacteria that live at the temperature of the water at that point in the flow out of the spring. Successive bands represent successively cooler temperatures.
Steam rising above Grand Prismatic Spring. Interesting to see how the steam just above the spring seems to be picking up some of the color of the spring.
Another view of Grand Prismatic Spring for reference.
Cliff Geyser erupting. This is part of the Black Sand Geyser Basin downslope from the Old Faithful area.
Interesting texture of the mineral deposits near one of the hot springs in Black Sand Geyser Basin. For scale, the miniature “cells” between walls of minerals are range up to maybe a half inch to an inch in length.
Steam plumes in the Old Faithful area just after sunset.
Eruption of Old Faithful Geyser shortly after sunset. It was a cool evening, and getting colder, so there were not many people around.

Shameless plug: if any of these photos catch your fancy as artwork for your home, workshop, or office, or as a gift for someone else, I would be happy to sell it to you as a framed print, a print on canvas, or a print on metal.
