Contest Theme: Music

Several weeks ago my “Electrons are Cheap” post mentioned a contest held by the Christian Photographers on Facebook group. Our group hosts a weekly competition in which the admins announce a theme and members submit a photo that they believe fits the theme. The most recent theme, before the competition took a break for the summer, was “Music.” Entries include photos of a bank of organ pipes, people playing various instruments, birds singing, and so on. My entry was a little different:

Artwork over cathedral entrance in Bern, Switzerland.

This may not look like “music,” but let me explain. The photo shows an artist’s depiction of Judgement Day over the entrance to an old church or cathedral in Bern, Switzerland. The people on our left, God’s right, are going to heaven and the people on our right, God’s left, are on their way to hell. But the artist apparently believed that Judgement Day would have music. If you look carefully, an angel over the saved is playing a ram’s horn trumpet, appropriate for entry into eternal bliss. And the angel above the damned is playing — look closely — a trombone! Kind of a stretch, but it sort of fits our theme of music, with apologies to the trombone players among us.
