Today, April 18, 2021 marks the 41st anniversary of the start of fuel emplacement at the Spent Fuel Test–Climax. The SFT-C was a multi-year, full-scale demonstration of retrievable underground storage of spent nuclear reactor fuel in quartz monzonite (also known as granite). We conducted this field test in Area 12 of the (former) Nevada Test Site. My first assignment at LLNL involved scientific aspects of this test.
